May 9, 2009 Route 66 trip

May 9, Saturday,

I am getting rather rummy these days. I am not sure what day it is. But we are having a great time.
I have to admit I am feeding of Angel’s notes. She keeps great notes & I don’t. By the end of the day I can’t remember what we saw in what town.

1st stop Funks Grove Sirup, and no I didn't spell it wrong! Cute little shop that we all barely fit into.

By 10am we were at Dixie's. It's a truck stop famous on the route which has a display of 66 memorabilia.

Leaving there we headed to Atlanta, IL. A cute little town that has a Paul Bunyon giant w/ a giant hot dog. There was this little old lady was watching us and waved to me & said “We are open so come on in” then she changed the sign to OPEN so we felt a little obligated & went in. Lucille is 91 and has worked at the museum since 1972. They are in the process of moving it from another building to this one so were not able to see the displays but watched the video.

By 11:15 we were in Lincoln. We saw the Postville Courthouse where Shirley told us all about the plants in Mary Lincoln’s garden. We are finding so many friendly people along the way who are more than willing to show off their history to us.

We went up to Lincoln’s tomb which was another beautiful monument.
Stopped by Sheas' gas station but it was all locked up.
Finally found our way to Cozy Dog where we had a late lunch. Yes I did have a cozy dog.
Some parts of Route 66 are hard to find, even though we are following a great guide book.
We do get a little sidetracked. We had to do a little backtracking to find the 1.4 mile section that is still brick.
The brick is very dark but you can see where they have done some repairs because the newer brick is very red.

We ended up in Collinsville, IL for the night at the Days Inn.
We will meet back up with Mike & Irene today and stay another night here.
We’ve been pushing it pretty hard and it’s catching up with all of us. We are as young as we used to be. (or want to be)
