May 10 Route 66 trip

May 10

We got to spend 2 nights in the same hotel. Kind of get to catch up a little.
Mike & Irene rejoined us at the hotel in time for lunch and to decide what we wanted to do today. Since it is Mothers day all the restaurants are way full so we just went to Arby’s.
I found a nice crack in my windshield this morning that wasn’t there last night. Guess I will be replacing it when I get home.

1st stop was the World’s Largest Catsup Bottle in IL, it is a water tower. then we went to the Chain of Rocks Bridge in MO. It was used by vehicles as Route 66 up until 1965. Now it is a pedestrian and bike path. I guess MO has some great bike paths. This bridge curves in the middle and is about a mile long. John, Angel & Mike walked the farthest up past the curve.
The rest of us were not as ambitious.

We went to the St Louis Gateway arch next. The Mississippi River was very high and dirty.

We were going to meet up with Greg & Sheryl from the Gateway PT Cruiser club at 6:30 at Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. We got there early and were amazed at the number of people waiting in line. I thought there was some big event going on but I guess that is normal.
John said that there was nothing that good that he’d wait in that line for it, but a woman heard him that and said to him… Oh yes there is! And she was right. They serve what they call concrete and it’s like a DQ Blizzard only better. We all had something different & sampled each others. Pretty good stuff. Irene says there is a place like it in Vancouver (WA) so when we get home we will have to check it out.

When Greg & Cheryl got there we all went to dinner down the street to Garavelli’s. We were expecting Italian but it was cafeteria style. Not the best food but good company.

Tomorrow or the next day we need to find a place to do laundry. We are buying t-shirts along the way but are running low on essentials.
We are getting ready to leave this morning to go through MO.
