May 16 Route 66 trip

May 16, 2009
Today we woke up to rain. It was a lot cooler than it has been. High only got into the 60’s.
It rained most of the day.
We went through Texola. The last town in OK. It has an ok Territorial Jail. It was pretty much a ghost town.

We got to Shamrock at 10am. Pulled up to the U-Drop Inn / tower Conoco. What a great art deco building.
It wasn’t open yet but we got lots of great pictures. Then along came the lady to open up just as we were about to give up. She was great & we bought lots of stuff at the gift shop.
Then on to McLean where we stopped at the Devil’s Rope / Old Route 66 Museum.
There was lots of barbed wire stuff to see & also some more Route 66 stuff.

In Conway we saw the Bug Ranch… a copy of Cadillac ranch.
Then we went to The Big Texan. Great place with great food. Sorry we weren’t able to meet up with Barbara & Stan. They were going to come up from the Houston area in their PT but a broken water main kept them from making it.

Off to see the Cadillac Ranch, it was raining so we just took pictures from the road & didn’t walk down to them. We make it all the way through TX in 1 day & 1 tank of gas.

We got to the Midway point of Route 66 in Adrian, OK. We stopped & had Ugly crust Pie at the Midpoint café. http://www.midpointroute66cafe.com/ They closed t 4 but Allan called & they stayed open for us. What great people.

We stayed at the legendary Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, NM. http://blueswallowmotel.com/
It was a great nostalgic experience. Bill & Terri run it & are very friendly. They informed us of all the surrounding stuff to see.
