May 26 & 27 Route 66 trip

We left Willows & there were lots less bugs in the morning.
Although I picked up a bug & wasn't feeling great all day. But none the less we made it to Crater Lake & what a glorious site it was, all covered with snow.
Angel had never seen it before so it was great to share that with her.
We stayed the night in Roseburg & headed for home in the morning.
It is bittersweet to end this trip. We had a great time with great friends.
But it is good to be home & am looking forward to sleeping in my own bed.
Thanks for sharing our trip with us.
Check out the last pic of my car... 16 states of dirt & a whole lot of bug guts.

May 25 Route 66 trip

Monday, May 25, 2009
Today we went to the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield, CA. Allan & Mindy got there before us & we got there just in time for the last tour of the day.
What a fun place. They give lots of samples too.Oh ya... we even got to wear fun paper hats.
Allan & Mindy went to visit family & Mary Lou, Rudy, Angel, John & I went to dinner in Vacaville then Mary & Rudy went off to see family… Then there were 3…
We are staying in Willows, CA tonight.
As we were driving down the freeway there we what looked like smoke plumes on the edge of the road. But it was really swarms of gnats. Billions of them… look closely at the pics.
Off to Crater Lake tomorrow.

May 24 Route 66 trip

May 24
Today we got up, had a good breakfast & headed for the end of the Route.
We stopped at the museum in Victorville.
We drove around & around Hollywood, saw the sign, & some sidewalk stars. Sunset Blvd was blocked off for the memorial holiday festival so we had to find our way around that.
We ended up at Santa Monica Pier which is the end of Route 66. We went to the beach part & took pictures.
Mary Lou & Rudy were the only ones brave enough to go into the water. It was getting chilly & windy & the rest of us opted out of the water. Mike & Irene split from the group to go visit family & the rest of us continued up North. Allan & Mindy got separated from us & went their own way. 5 of us landed for the night in Buttonwillow.
Now we will do some siteseeing on our way back to Portland. We are going to the JellyBelly factory on Monday.

May 23 Route 66 trip

Today we had breakfast at the Wagon Wheel as we left Needles.
We saw names written with rocks placed on the berm beside the road from Essex to Amboy.
We stopped at the Ludlow Cafe. Then went into Daggett to see a few old buildings & found Peggy Sue's 50's diner. What a fun place. We all had ice cream from the soda fountain.
Then we went into Barstow to the Route 66 Mother Road museum. We are spending the night here. It was nice to get into a motel fairly early today.

May 22 Route 66 trip

May 22, 2009
We stopped at a Route 66 museum. Then went down a very winding road into Oatman where wild burro’s wander through the town begging for carrots. I saw one play tug of war with a woman & her bag of carrots. The burro won but she sent her son to retrieve the bag before it ate them all.
They are very friendly & you really have to drive slow because they walk right down the road.

We then took a little side trip to Lake Havasu to see the London Bridge. It was very hot 98 degrees.
We ended up in Needles, CA. Some of us went to dinner at the Wagon Wheel… an old Route 66 restaurant.

May 21 Route 66 trip

May 21
Today we went to Oak Creek Canyon & Sedona.
The canyon was way cool. Absolutely breathtaking. We were able to drive down into the canyon & get up close views. Then we walked around Sedona a little.

We then went to Seligman, where a man named Angel lives who pushed to get Route 66 made historical.
We had dinner at the Road Kill Café. Very good food.

We spent the night in Kingman.

We had dinner at a 50’s style diner… The Galaxy in Flagstaff.
